Coaches

Barry Phelan is a former Scottish International gymnast and was a finalist at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. This was followed by a career in ‘show business’ where Barry appeared in and co-ordinated ‘gymnastic’ sequences for TV and theatre productions. He has been coaching full time since 1997 and has undertaken roles including Head Coach to the Southern Region Men’s Squad, Senior Men’s Coach to Hampshire Centre of Excellence and Senior Men’s Coach and Coaches Training Officer at Basingstoke Gymnastics Club. Barry was also Great Britain Coach at the 2002 Team Gym “Euroteam’ Championships in France.

Barry has British Gymnastics coaching qualifications in -

      Pre School Gymnastics & Movement - club coach

      Men’s Artistic Gymnastics - senior club coach

      Women’s Artistic Gymnastics - club coach

      Team Gym - senior club coach

      Sports Acrobatics - club coach

      Trampolining - coach

Barry is a British Gymnastics Course Tutor for the Fundamentals Early Years programme.

Karen Phelan was a gymnast at the highly acclaimed Southampton Gymnastics Club where the first ’Tumble Tots’ class in Britain began in 1978 and acted as a benchmark for all future Pre-School gymnastics classes. She went on to become Senior Women’s Coach at Southampton and has also coached at various schools and leisure centres throughout Hampshire, until recently Karen coached Pre - School and Development Squads at Basingstoke Gymnastics Club.

Karen is a British Gymnastics Club Coach in Women’s Artistic and Pre-School Gymnastics.

 

Barry and Karen live in South Somerset with their three children.
